Constable’s Clouds

In describing a creative faculty, of which is an artist’s receptiveness to the world and its natural marvels, John Keats wrote in 1817, “Negative Capability, that is, when man is capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts without any irritable reaching after fact and reason”. In other words, the willingness to embrace uncertainty, live with mystery, and make peace with ambiguity. Perhaps he was listening out for English painter John Constable‘s (1776-1837) cloud studies to come along in the 1820′s…

On a lighter note, and to add this to the mix in contemporary creative work, Maria Popova of  Brainpicking mentions the ‘negative capability’ in the work of illustrator/designer Christoph Niemann, who uses this ambiguity as a design tool…

Callum Innes

Edinburgh artist Callum Innes‘ work exclusively explores the material of the paint itself. By applying and removing paint to canvas or paper, he adds and subtracts in order to arrive at a quiet, contemplative field of colour. In the video below, he walks us through his studio and shows how he works in watercolours…

As Amazon describes the film: “Painter, a feature documentary from director Michael Gregory, explores the illusive mystery of the process of making art. From his studio on the Italian coast, the contemporary American painter Caio Fonseca conjures whimsically arresting works of abstract art. The film intimately captures the isolation, resolve, and playful curiosity required to create. Attempting to articulate his methods, Fonseca’s thoughts evolve into a meditation on painting, language, and meaning in art. Tracing the origins of his work, the painter reveals that his singular forms are not only summoned from the imagination, but also emerge from a rigorous studio practice and a personal lineage of painting. Through his humor and self-examination, Fonseca reminds us that the work of an artist is not simply a reflection of life, but the essence of life.” Find it at Amazon.
