Shocking Life

‘Shocking Life’, fashion maven Elsa Schiaparelli‘s autobiography from 1954…

…with beautiful illustrations of her perfume of the same name by costume designer, illustrator Marcel Vèrtes

…and her description of the naming of her perfume…

“The color flashed in front of my eyes. Bright, impossible, impudent, becoming, life-giving, like all the light and the birds and the fish in the world put together, a color of China and Peru but not of the West—a shocking color, pure and undiluted.”

Check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on her here and Judith Thulman’s article on the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute and its imaginary conversation between Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada (May 10-August 19, 2012) and Ugly Chic, in The New Yorker here and here….
